Modern Ranch Style Living – S. Highline Dr.
The Modern Ranch-Style Home
When it comes to architectural styles, few have had the enduring appeal and practicality of the ranch-style home. Originating in the United States in the 1920s, ranch-style homes quickly gained popularity for their functional layout and unpretentious charm. Over time, these homes have evolved, adapting to the needs and tastes of modern homeowners. The Modern Ranch Style home is a dream for many, and is defined by a handful of notable characteristics…
Wide Floor plan Layout
The most distinctive characteristic of ranch-style homes is their wide floor plan. Unlike other homes, ranch-style houses are often built on a single level, providing convenience and accessibility. Modern Ranch Style homes may very well have multiple floors, though the origin of the style prioritized on large ground level floor. The single-level layout also creates a seamless flow between rooms, promoting a sense of openness and connection within the home.
Long, Low Profile:
Ranch-style homes are known for their long, low profile. These homes typically have a rectangular or L-shaped footprint, stretching horizontally across the lot rather than vertically. The low-pitched roofline further emphasizes the horizontal nature of the house. This design element not only contributes to the home’s aesthetic appeal but also helps it blend harmoniously with the surrounding landscape.
Open Floor Plans:
Modern ranch-style homes often feature open floor plans that integrate living spaces, such as the kitchen, dining area, and living room. This design concept maximizes the sense of space and allows for easy interaction and communication between family members and guests. The open floor plan also creates a versatile environment for entertaining, accommodating both large gatherings and intimate family moments.
Emphasis on Indoor-Outdoor Living:
One of the hallmarks of ranch-style homes is their connection to the outdoors. Large windows, sliding glass doors, and patio areas are common features that allow for seamless integration between indoor and outdoor living spaces. Homeowners can enjoy ample natural light, beautiful views, and easy access to outdoor areas for relaxation, entertaining, or gardening. This emphasis on indoor-outdoor living enhances the overall quality of life and reinforces a connection with nature.
Minimalist Aesthetics:
Modern ranch-style homes often embrace minimalist aesthetics. Clean lines, simple forms, and uncluttered spaces define the interior and exterior of these homes. While maintaining their traditional charm, contemporary ranch-style homes incorporate modern elements and materials, such as glass, steel, and concrete, to create a sleek and sophisticated look. The minimalist approach fosters a sense of calm and tranquility, promoting a stress-free living environment.
Integration of Sustainable Features:
As sustainability becomes increasingly important, modern ranch-style homes often incorporate eco-friendly features. Energy-efficient appliances, solar panels, and well-insulated windows and doors are commonly found in these homes. Additionally, sustainable landscaping practices, such as rainwater harvesting and native plantings, are often implemented to minimize water usage and support local ecosystems. By integrating these features, ranch-style homes align with the principles of environmental responsibility and energy conservation.

We got the inside scoop from our S. Highline Circ. Project Manager, David McClung, and had an amazing time touring the finished project! David shared a few key insights into the remodel of this beautiful home.
What was a defining challenge you and the team were faced with in this remodel process?
“The biggest challenge was probably matching the floors to the existing. It was an old walnut that we refinished and had to patch in areas where we added/deleted cabinetry. We refinished them, but the repair areas were a darker cut of walnut that didn’t have the heathering from natural sun exposure over time.”
DJ McClung, Project Manager
Did one specific area undergo a more remarkable transformation?
“Yes, definitely the kitchen. Navy base and stained walnut uppers gave it a classic modern aesthetic and really gave it the edginess it once lacked.”
DJ McClung, Project Manager
What would you say the biggest “win” or most show-stopping element of the design ended up being?
“Our major win was the waterfall island countertop. It just looks amazing and the veining flows through the waterfall edge, it is always so cool to include such a seamless design element that ties the whole feel of the house together.”
DJ McClung, Project Manager
