Employee Spotlight: Mike Anderson, Project Manager

Meet Mike Anderson, Project Manager

Factor Design Build is unique in a number of ways. But at the end of the day, it all comes down to one thing: the people. Every member of the Factor team shares a passion for creating inspired spaces that improve people’s lives.

Mike Anderson, one of our project managers, is the next team member in our series. When Mike joined the Factor team, he brought with him years of experience in managing projects, carpentry, woodworking, and more. He takes pride in every aspect of his craft, from a well-organized job site to a perfectly snug joint on a piece of custom-built furniture. We talked with Mike to learn more…

What attracted you to Factor Design Build?

“Before Factor Design Build, I was working for a design-build firm in DC and I knew I wanted to continue working in design-build when I moved to Colorado. What drew me to Factor Design Build was a combination of their aesthetic and company culture. I could tell after my first few conversations with them that they were a good group of people and it would be a fun place to work. It’s also important to me to feel good about what I’m creating so Factor was a no-brainer after seeing their portfolio.”

Is there a part of your role as a project manager that is your favorite?

“Hmm, that’s a hard one. I like the problem solving that comes with each project. You never know what you’re going to get when you open a house up. Finding innovative solutions to make everything work is what keeps things interesting day-to-day.”

Do you have a favorite section of projects to work on?

“If I had to focus on one room, it’d be a kitchen remodel. I come from a cabinet making background, so there’s also a bit of nostalgia there. It also gives me the opportunity to flex my fine woodworking skills as it’s a high visibility/high traffic area and everything needs to look spot on. I also think the transformation you see in a kitchen can be the most drastic. It’s always an amazing before-and-after process!”

Will you share some advice for people looking to start a remodel process?

“It is going to be stressful. There are going to be times that will be hard during the process. But if you hire the right people, they help alleviate that stress. That’s why I like design-build. We create a partnership. We are with you every step of the process and it eases the stress.”

What is your favorite travel destination?

“If it’s a place I’ve been to before, I’d have to say Milford Sound, New Zealand. I lived and worked in Fiordland National Park, which was very remote, and gave me an opportunity to live a lifestyle I probably won’t experience again. I traveled around the South Island for 6 months and I would love to go back to those places someday. But if you mean places I want to go to in the future, I really would love to go to Patagonia or Norway someday… hopefully soon.”

What is your favorite movie?

“Breaking Away. It’s a cycling movie from the ’70s where the hometown kids compete against the university team in an annual cycling race. I like the underdog story and I used to be an endurance athlete, competing in cross-country and track & field, so I can relate to the training and lifestyle and anxiety that comes with racing.”

Employee Spotlight: Brianna McCaffrey, Designer

Meet Brianna McCaffrey, Designer

BriannaFactor Design Build is unique in a number of ways. But at the end of the day, it all comes down to one thing: the people. Every member of the Factor team shares a passion for creating inspired spaces that improve people’s lives.

Brianna McCaffrey, one of our creative designers, is the next team member in our series. She is an experienced designer in both residential and commercial spaces with a passion for bringing creative solutions to any situation. Bri tells us more…

What attracted you to Factor Design Build?

“Initially, I liked the idea of getting back into high-end residential design. I had done that for a few years in Dallas, and I missed having that creative freedom to design such unique and custom spaces for my clients. I was also drawn to the culture. I could tell this was a company I was going to love working for. They were fun, genuine and had a real passion for what they did. It’s also been fun to learn more about the construction side and be more involved with that process.”

Do you have a favorite place to look for architecture and design inspiration?

“Pinterest has always been my go-to, but more recently I’ve been finding great inspiration on Instagram. There are so many talented designers throughout the world that use the platform, so the material always feels fresh and forward-thinking. I do have to say though, I’m still a sucker for beautiful home magazines. I could spend a whole afternoon looking through them.”

Will you share some advice for people looking to start a remodel process?

“Define your goal for the project. This is the time to assess your needs and wants. Think of how you plan to use the remodeled space and what will function best for your family. Also, having a good sense of your style will really help your architects and designers create a space you’ll truly love!”

What is your favorite travel destination?

“Switzerland is by far the most incredible place I’ve ever traveled too. Everything from its breath-taking scenery, to its diverse culture and delicious food. If you’re a chocolate and cheese lover, like myself, you’ll be in heaven. It’s definitely a place that needs to be on everyone’s bucket list.”

What is your favorite movie?

“As embarrassed as I am (or not) to admit this – it’s Legally Blonde. I’m that girl that can quote all three of the movies. But come on, who doesn’t love Reese Witherspoon!”

Employee Spotlight: Dain Carlson, Lead Architect

Meet Dain Carlson, Lead Architect

Factor Design Build is unique in a number of ways. But at the end of the day, it all comes down to one thing: the people. Every member of the Factor team shares a passion for creating inspired spaces that improve people’s lives. Our commitment leads to happy clients—and a happy us as we work toward a common goal.

With this in mind, we are excited to announce a new blog series highlighting our Factor team members. We will use this series as a way for you to get to know us as you move through the design-build process with Factor.

Dain Carlson, our lead Denver architect, is the first team member in our series. He’s a licensed architect with over 15 years of experience in a full range of project types. We sat down with Dain to learn more:

What attracted you to Factor Design Build?

“A few things, really. I liked the idea of being able to work on residential projects. I had been working on commercial projects, but residential projects are much more personal. I was excited about that aspect. I also liked the culture. I could tell right away that the people were going to be great and it’d be a fun place to work. Lastly, I was excited about the construction aspect of it. It’s great to be an architect in design-build because you can see the whole project through all the way to the end. It’s great to see your designs turn into a home.”

What is your favorite place to look for architecture and design inspiration?

“Instagram is always a good place to start. It helps get some ideas flowing. I also find inspiration from the spaces themselves. Houses and buildings should be connected and inspired by that setting. But most of all, I always find inspiration from the natural environment. I go hiking to find ideas from natural materials and different textures.”

What advice do you have for people looking to start a remodel process?

“Start collecting ideas and inspiration. Look at architecture and homes that inspire you. Sit down and come up with a list of dreams that you want to be in your home. Imagine what you want the space to be and how you want your lives to look in that space. Also, get excited about the process!”

What is your favorite travel destination?

“Definitely Japan. I’ve been a few times and studied there in school for a while. I love that everything is done well, no matter what it is. The architecture, the food… everything. The people are so dedicated and want to do a great job. I also love the mix of architecture. You have a really modern building next to a 600-year-old temple. It’s all really inspiring!”

Next time you visit our office, you’re sure to find Dain hard at work designing a beautiful home to fit your family and lifestyle. You can also find Dain skiing, running, hiking, and enjoying the company of his wife and their two Bouvier des Flandres.
